Testosterone can be used as part of HRT primarily to help with the symptom of low libido. Low libido ( or loss of interest in sex ) is a complex symptom often involving multi-factors such as past experiences, upbringing, body image, relationships, societal and historical influences and expectations. Often, medication alone may not be the only answer to solving this particular symptom. We can suggest referral options and provide accessible resources should you need additional help and support.
When testosterone was originally trialled and granted its medical use license, it had been tested for male use only. However, we now know that women can use the same products as part of their HRT but use it in much lower doses. When we do prescribe it, we call this "unlicensed use ".
Currently, testosterone has only been shown to have limited effect on the low libido symptom for women ( and unfortunately based on the evidence, not everyone will see a return of their libido even when using testosterone ). However, some women report improvement in symptoms such as brain fog, motivation, aches and pains and energy levels when they use it. Until this has been proven by randomised clinical trials, these claims remain anecdotal.
Should you already be using HRT and want to try Testosterone, we ask that you have a serum blood test ( blood that is taken from the vein ) to measure your current total testosterone level before your consultation with us. You must already be well established on HRT before adding Testosterone to it.
Options for having a Testosterone blood test carried out in advance of your Testosterone appointment with us include asking whether your GP would be happy to do this for you (we can interpret the results) or else arranging for a serum blood test to be carried out via our affiliate -Medichecks. This option would be at your own cost, but you can receive our discounted rates when you book by using this link
Only serum blood test results can be accepted. Unfortunately we cannot accept finger prick sample results.
We are unable to prescribe Testosterone for you without receiving a serum blood test result for total testosterone level in advance of your appointment with us OR if you are not already well established on HRT.
Please Contact us at support@yourmenopausenurse.co.uk to provide us with your results before your Testosterone consultation and include your full name and date of birth in the email as well as a screengrab/copy of your result. The mail box is monitored Mon-Fri and will only ever be viewed by Your Menopause Nurse.
